Three-Dimensional Words

Inspired by drawings created by California artist Ed Ruscha, the students did pencil drawings of words. The assignment was to pick a word and do a pencil drawing with at least three tones, light, medium, and dark. Then add an element that was representative of the word. Here are the final drawings.

Mandalas

The first assignment for the drawing class was to create mandalas. It was a complex process and the students were challenged, but worked hard to complete them. They did a great job.

This first set are all in black and white. All the students received the same instructions. Notice how each student created their own unique artworks.

Shoes!

This was a two part assignment. In the first part, the students were asked to decorate a pair of shoes. In the second part, they painted “portraits” of the shoes that they had decorated. Both the shoes and the painting of the shoes were done using acrylics. The students did a really wonderful job for both parts.

Pastel Still Life Art

Pastel artist, Pat Redman, spent three days in our classroom teaching how to paint with pastels. The students worked from still life set-ups, but were encouraged to interpret the still lifes using their imagination. They were challenged by how to render fabric and how to three dimensional forms, but all came up with successful pastels.

Different Approaches, Different Views to the Landscape

Some students chose to focus on a particular part of a landscape, specifically trees. Other students chose to view the land from above. And other students decided to paint visionary landscapes or inner scapes.

Assignment 2: Watercolor Landscapes

The second watercolor assignment was to paint a landscape. Students approached this assignment in several different ways and many struggled with the assignment.

In this first group of paintings, they did more traditional landscapes. What I love about teaching art is how students put their own personality even though they are all given the same assignment.
